<헨델의 울게하소서 by 스테파노 디오니스, 파리넬리 O.S.T>

울게하소서  (Lascia Ch'io Pianga) - 헨델          

"홀로 울게 하소서"와 "사랑하는 나의 임"은 바로크 오페라 중에서도 가장 사랑 받는 아리아이다.  특히 그 두 아리아는 영화 "파리넬리"에서 많은 사람들에게 깊은 감명을 주었지만, 그것이 모두 헨델의 오페라 "리날도"에 나오는 아리아라는 것을, 그리고 어떤 상황에서 노래되는지 아는 사람은 많지 않다.        

울게하소서(Lascia Ch'io Pianga)는 리날도 2막에서 여주인공 알미레나에 의해 불려지는 곡으로 영화 파리넬리에 삽입되어 더욱 유명해진 곡이다. 십자군 전쟁을 배경으로, 영웅 리날도와 상관의 딸인 알미레나,  그리고 적군의 여왕 아르미다와의 삼각관계로 산의 요새에서 아르미다의 포로가 된 알미레나가 자신의 운명을 탄식하며 부르는 노래다.      

헨델이 영국에서 작곡한 최초의 이탈리아 오페라 "리날도"는 1711년 2월 24일 초연되자마자 압도적인 성공을 거두어 연일 초만원 사태를 빚으면서 보름 동안 공연이 계속되었다. 이 오페라의 압도적인 성공에는 여러 요인이 있었겠지만, 캐스팅이 초호화 진용이었다는 점, 아름다운 아리아로 가득 차 있다는 점 이외에도 환상적인 무대장치도 큰 몫을 했다.             

중세 로마시대에는 교황이 성가대뿐만 아니라 오페라 무대에서도 여성이 노래하는 것을 금하였기때문에, 변성이 이전의 사내아이를 거세시켜 맑은 고음으로 노래를 할 수 있는 목소리를 오래도록 지속시켜서 소프라노를 대신했는데 이를 '카스트라토'라고 불렀다고한다.. 그리고 '파리넬리'의 실제 주인공은 카를로 브로스키(1705 - 1782)라는 카스트라토 가수로, 그의 목소리는 아름답고 힘이 있었으며, 풍부한 기교와 유연한 장식음 등으로 많은 찬사를 받았다고 한다.

개인적으로 피아노 연주는 부담없이 아름다운 선율을 들을 수 있어 좋다.
